School for Materialist Research: Lecture by Vera Bühlmann

Materialism and the Public Nature of Knowledge: Michel Serres Circumstantial Universalism

Michel Serres is widely known as a philosopher of science, literature, and especially perhaps communication. But his philosophy is before all a natural philosophy, a veritable communicational physics (Bühlmann, 2020). This talk explores how to reconnect Serres’s neo-materialist thought of what I call circumstantial universalism not only with the ancient atomism of Lucretius, but also with the pre-Socratic monisms of Anaximander and Pythagoras. The latter both sought to mathematize the different approaches of their teachers and peer scholars to nature as physis (in the sense of a material (elemental) primary body, like water, fire, air etc). My argument will be that “mathematisation“ here – abstract, but still pre-formal (in the sense of pre-axiomatic) – is computational in a way that bears great actuality for how we can come to terms with computation today: especially Anaximanders’ accommodation of mechanics within the materially-circular and percolative mode of “being” of the meteora (with his notion of the apeiron) bears important clues for how we can learn to cope with the constitutive circuitous, self-referential “logics” that manifests through and is at work in computation also today.

Key to such an understanding is how one relates to the reality of time. Two related projects of contemporary thinkers, who both engage with computation in substantial rather than formalist manner, will be profiled in the light of each other such as to find a concrete milieu to situate the abstract speculations sketched above: The two projects are that of a Grand Récit of the Universe (Michel Serres) and that of The Unnameable Present (Roberto Calasso).

CONVIVIA #1 "Filth": Call for Submissions

  • Google Calendar ICS

Contributors are invited to articulate architectonic cases out of a particular topic of their own interest and choice – articulated to stand up and out of the background of the issues' pre-text (the un-decisive word "filth" for the first issue).

Setting the table for this, contributors are invited to look for orientation in the assortment of "victuals" attached to the present call. They are indicative (yet not prescriptive) in relation to the pre-text of the issue.

Proposed contributions will be evaluated on the basis of a 500 words abstract.

Contributions must be written in English, and should be between 5000 and 9000 words.

All texts (including footnotes, image credits, etc.) should be submitted digitally in .doc format and edited according to the Oxford Style Manual. The font of choice should be Times New Roman 12 pt with double line-spacing.

Proposals for contributions to Convivia #1 "Filth" may be submitted electronically to convivia@attp.tuwien.ac.at before 30/07/2021. Delivery of the full papers is scheduled for 30/11/2021.

(ONCE) UPON (A) PLENITUDE

mail-flyer-front.jpg

(ONCE) UPON (A) PLENITUDE
Summoning Commonalities beyond Totality

The comparison between architecture and language is perhaps one of the most recurring clichés of architecture theory. Both language and architecture can in fact be understood as structures resting upon dialectics, as “mediators” of different positions facing off one another. Yet today dialectic entanglements tend to dissociate and tear apart, striving to end their relations for good. Different positions thereby seem to be turning more and more into stark opposition. In such loud escalation of conflictual positions – between man and planet, humanism and materialism, life and technology, culture and nature… . Even science itself seems to be called to take parts, to be therefore one of the many voices screaming against the others. How to find a stability upon such indeterminate, noisy grounds? The Sophistication Conference™ of this year invites to address such topics by looking for how to conceive of measure and moderateness beyond reactionary moralism and conservativeness. Its aim is to rethink the global beyond an immanent agonism of dialectical opposites. (ONCE) UPON(A) PLENITUDE is an invitation to eschew comparative analysis and look at the givenness of terms in the terms of their construction, as a way to make room – to open up a cosmocratic and political space by the means of architectonic articulations – into the loudness of the contemporary.

SOPHISTICATION CONFERENCE #3

COPIA AND COPIOUSNESS.
CIRCUITOUS ARTICULATIONS THAT MATTER

How can we find a novel understanding of human intellectuality in co-existence with artificial intelligence? The Sophistication Conferences are dedicated to a basic kind of literacy in how to think about coding as an "alloy-praxis" that glues letters with numbers, physics with information, mathematics with language. If the digital has placed us in an era of  New Sophistics, we need an up-to-date corresponding discourse on Sophistication. At the core of such a new materialist literacy is a different relationality among time, nature, subject, and object: Hence our interest is in a »digital gnomonics« that could provide a theoretical framework for addressing computational modelling, machine learning and algorithmic reasoning in a manner that will eventually propel and facilitate ethics, not moralism.

Ghosts of Transparency

GHOSTS OF TRANSPARENCY

Information and data are not synonyms: data (etymo- logically, the ‘given’) has to be treated, articulated, read or deciphered in such a way as to contain information. The sheer amount of data today tends to obscure this important difference between data and information: data is entropic, while information is where this entropy is negated; infor- mation is negentropic. An emerging political imperative of ‘transparency’ conflates the abundance of data with an increase in information. Unfortunately, the reverse is often the case: The more ‘data’ is rendered available and passed off as ‘information’ or ‘knowledge’, the more opaque the dealings with ‘information’ become. This is perhaps one of the greatest challenges we face with regard to becoming lit- erate in the algorithmic and symbolization processes that organize data in our world today—processes we refer to here as ‘ghosts of transparency’.

ITTEN, BREATH, ROBOT

research group H.A.U.S. will do two performances on the re-invention of the human body. Today we are experiencing massive socio-technical changes. Our bodies face the artificial bodies of AI-controlled robots. the situation is similar to the search for early modernism for the “new human being” for a “new time”. Johannes Itten, as one of the few, tried radically to inscribe the human body in the production of architecture. Yet classical modernism has ultimately succeeded in reducing the human body to its extensions and its senses to sight. new artificial bodies are now forcing the reconception of the human body in architecture.
dance-performance: an improvisation of a dancer, a musician and a humanoid robot.
presence-performance: visitors breathe with a humanoid robot – reenacting an anecdote from the early bauhaus.

who can feel an AI?
how do artificial bodies inscribe themselves into human space?
what do these crude imitation of human bodies tell us about our bodies?

ATTP CONVIVIA 03 / Adam Nocek DESIGNING BY GOVERNMENT (21. Mai 2019)

CONVIVIA_03-poster copy.jpg

DESIGNING BYGOVERNMENT

This talk proposes that design is inherent to Michel Foucault’s work on the dispositif (apparatus) and governmentality. In particular, the lecture examines how the strategic coordination of heterogeneities in an apparatus is the result of a governmental design strategy. In so doing, the talk also makes strong connections to Alfred North Whitehead’s work on “sociality” in an effort to expand and deepen Foucault’s own conception of how heterogeneous forces are “steered” or “designed” to converge to achieve particular ends.

With this reframing not only does design become the conceptual bridge between the “art” and “rationality” of government in Foucault—the “design” of government— but it also becomes central to understanding how contemporary technologies of computational governance shape human and nonhuman practices at various scales through its design of apparatuses. The lecture concludes by examining how governmental design intervenes in current design discourse by speculatively reframing not only the spatial and temporal scales at which design operates but also what (non-human) “design thinking” really means in an era of computational governance.

NIKLAS DAMIRIS
INSIGHTS FROM QUANTUM PHYSICS AND FINANCE FOR ALTERNATE ECONOMIES-ECOLOGIES

How can insights from quantum physics refresh our approach to our profoundly intertwined ecological / economic challenges? I argue that the quantum appears weird only because we interpret it through entrenched cybernetic categories like ‘information’, ‘feedback’, ‘observation’, and ‘data-base’, which become problematic in a world characterized by indeterminacy, negative probabilities, non-locality and measurement effects. Furthermore, this world is not confined to the small as is often claimed. I propose that we institute a new ecologically attuned economic practice based on finance approached as a quantum phenomenon. Such an endeavor presupposes that those who participate in it ‘have skin in the game’ and their aim is not to discount the future, but to enable it by facing courageously its indeterminacy and the freedom it affords.

Niklas Wild Damiris is a theoretical physicist turned economic theorist. He lived in Silicon Valley for over 25 years working as research scientist in well- known think tanks there including: Xerox PARC, Apple Advanced Technology Group, IBM Almaden Research Center. He co-founded start-ups including: Pliant / sociotechnical systems, Capitalizing Communities, and Quantum-ly. Dr. Damiris has been a visiting scholar and occasional lecturer at Stanford University for many years. He has also been Research Fellow at University of California at Santa Cruz; Consulting professor, Laboratory for Monetary Research, Department of Economics, University of Lugano, Switzerland; Special Advisor to the Director for Social Science at the University of Southern Switzerland; Corresponding member of the Institut de Recherche et d’Innovation, Paris; Affiliate Researcher at Topological Media Lab Montreal, and Affiliate Researcher at Synthesis ASU.

Architectonics & Law, Colloquy # 1 (30. Nov.- 4. Dec. 2018)

“Do not be troubled by the fact that languages [the “Builder’s Language” and [the extended “Builder’s Language”] consist only of orders. If you want to say that this shows them to be incomplete, ask yourself whether our language is complete;—whether it was so before the symbolism of chemistry and the notation of the infinitesimal calculus were incorporated in it; for these are, so to speak, suburbs of our language. (And how many houses or streets does it take before a town begins to be a town?) Our language can be seen as an ancient city: a maze of little streets and squares, of old and new houses, and of houses with additions from various periods; and this surrounded by a multitude of new boroughs with straight regular streets and uniform houses.”

[Ludwig Wittgenstein, PI §18]

ENGLISH

«Character within Regularity: On the Relations between Generalisation and Abstraction»

Generalisation and abstraction play key roles in law as well as in any architectonics; Sentences, laws, articles, articulation, codification, canonisation, rule are central concepts in both domains. Only rarely are these concepts and their functions the explicit focus of interest, despite the fact that they find application in any kind of reflection.

This colloquy opens up a dialogue on the relations between abstraction and generalisation between the Department for Criminal Law, Fribourg University Switzerland, and the Department for Architecture Theory and Philosophy of Technics at Vienna University of Technology. In the centre of our shared interest stand the relationships between generalisation and abstraction, and how these relationships unlock something like "character" within regularity. This interests results on the side of law from the meaning of "justice" in concrete decisions, and from the architectonic side from the meaning of "adequacy" of concrete architectures. We will ask questions such as that of the principle possibility of "applying" law, or the principle possibility of subsuming concrete jurisdiction under a coherent concept of law, or that of the nature of rules or the constructibility of such a nature of rules. Of central interest will be how mathematical thinking and language concepts play together in any formulation of regularity.

The course language will be English.

SOPHISTICATION CONFERENCE #2 NOVEMBER 8-10 2018

IN »LIEU« OF STATEMENTS, »ARTICULATION«

How can we find a novel understanding of human intellectuality in co-existence with artificial intelligence? The Sophistication Conferencesare dedicated to a basic kind of literacy in how to think about coding in the terms of a geometry of spectra and communication. At the core of such a literacy is a different relationality of time, nature, subject, and object. Our interest is in a philosophy of the transcendental objective, at whose core resides the question of »how to embrace what presents itself as an obstacle« rather than how to make it »go away«. We see in such a »digital gnomonics« a powerful framework for addressing computational modeling, machine learning and algorithmic reasoning in a manner that does not stage an antagonistic competition between human and artificial intelligence.

ARCHITEKTUR UND THEORIE – EIN SYMPOSIUM

“What is a Dispositif?”
Dispositif Theory and the Philosophy of Technics

This seminar will study the genealogy of the concept of dispositif (mechanism, conceptual device) in the biopolitical philosophy of Michel Foucault. Following the influence of biologist and historian Georges Canguilhem, beginning in works and lectures of 1975, Foucault employs this term specifically to avoid three other dominant terms in the history of political philosophy: organism, machine, and structure. The uniqueness of Foucault’s approach to the nature of power is that he combines both biological and technical forms in explaining its evolutionary path, which becomes more multiple and dispersed throughout modern societies, and which differentiates its concept from the idea of mechanism that belongs to modern science after Descartes. Thus, the major result of Cartesianism was “to rationalize” the idea of mechanism as a knowledge that is particular to the human species, and not as a biological capacity that is found to be present in most living organisms. In turn, this was responsible for anthropomorphizing the relation between machine and organism, introducing a fundamental dehiscence between these forms, one that continues to be played out today in determining the relations between humans, animals, and cybernetic (or digitalized) creatures.

In addition to the major works and lectures of Foucault that appear between 1975-1979, from the first volume of The History of Sexuality to the lecture course on The Birth of Biopolitics, in this seminar we will also examine the critical reception of Foucault’s description of power and its biopolitical dispositifs in other thinkers such as Giorgio Agamben, Gilles Deleuze, and Roberto Esposito.

Each three-hour seminar will consist of lecture presentation, in the first hour, followed by close examination and discussion of the assigned readings. The Seminar will be taught in English. Seminar papers written in German will also be accepted.

Digital Gnomonics Workshop Vienna (July 8 - 14, 2018)

Vienna University of Technology TU Wien
Prechtlsaal, Main Building
(daily 9.30 am to 7 pm)

With these workshops we want to engage with the vibrant and intriguing questions of architecture in the world of data. During these weeks of intensive exchange, we will immerse ourselves into abstract thinking, coding as literacy, and digital citizenship in architecture. Do you think that digital architecture has reached a point of saturation? Are you interested in stepping beyond the current discourses around digitality today? We believe that digital technologies, behaviours and environments have a far greater potential than their current articulations suggest. Let us think of coding as a new literacy!

Get in touch if you are interested!

Co-organized by:

Ludger Hovestadt, architect and computer scientist, professor for CAAD at ETH Zurich.
Vera Bühlmann, philosopher and media theorist, professor for architecture theory at TU Vienna.
Elias Zafiris, quantum physicist and mathematician, professor at Eötvös University, Budapest.

Coding the World

Forum Vertigo: Code-Decode the World

The subject of this introductory session to the theme “Coder le monde” (Coding the World) is to draw up an epistemological and historical perspective of relationships that are both fundamental to and dependent on the evolution of techniques; binding code and art, reason and imaginary, symbol and meaning, human and machine.

The first panel, held by Vera Bühlmann, Pierre Cassou-Noguès and Jasia Reichardt, will address Algorithmics, Art, and Society.
