Vera Bühlmann arbeitet als Verfasserin von Kommentaren zu und Übersetzerin zwischen zahlreichen “vernakulären Sprachen” des gegenwärtigen Denkens, vorallem in Umgang und Bezug zu Philosophie, Mathematik und Architektur. Seit September 2016 ist sie als Professorin an die TU Wien berufen, wo sie seither den Lehr- und Forschungsbereich Architekturtheorie und Technikphilosohie ATTP leitet. Sie hat an der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Basel im Fach Medienwissenschaft mit einer Arbeit über die »Herkünfte und Topoi medialer Architektonik« promoviert (summa cum laude), und im Jahr 2002 an der Universität Zurich ihr Master Studium (Lizentiat) in den Fächern Englische Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, Philosophie, und Medienwissenschaft abgeschlossen. Als Dozentin hat sie an der Hochschule für Kunst in Basel gearbeitet, und seit 2010 das applied-virtuality lab an der ETH Zürich mit begründet und aufgebaut (an der Professur für Digitale Architektonik, Institut für Technik in der Architektur ITA), welches sie seither gemeinsam mit Ludger Hovestadt leitet. Sie ist Mitherausgeberin der applied virtuality Buchreihe (Birkhäuser, seit 2010). Von 2012-2013 war Sie als Gastforscherin am Future Cities Laboratory an der NUS Singapore. Seit 2021 ist sie Mitglied des Hochschulrates der Universität der Künste UdK Berlin, und ebenfalls seit 2021 ist ATTP, zusammen mit dem Center for Philosophical Technologies at Arizona State University und des Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities, Skopje, Mitbegründerin der School for Materialist Research (SMR), “an informal graduate and post-doc level program that offers seminars and workshops that address the materialisms running through contemporary science, philosophy, art, mathematics, design, architecture, and politics.” Zu den weiteren Kooperationspartnern gehört auch das Critical Inquiry Lab at the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Vera Bühlmann ist Autorin der beiden Monographien Mathematics and Information in the Philosophy of Michel Serres (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020) und Die Nachricht, ein Medium: Städtische Architektonik, generische Medialität (ambra 2014), Herausgeberin (mit Michael R. Doyle und Selena Savic) von Ghosts of Transparency: Shadows Cast and Shadows Cast Out (Birkhäuser 2019), und (mit Ludger Hovestadt) der Metalithikum Bücher (Printed Physics 2012; Domesticating Symbols 2013, Coding as Literacy 2015, Symbolizing Existence 2016). Ebenfalls zeichnet sie für drei Bücher zum Umgang mit dem digitalen “Plenty”: A Genius Planet (Birkhäuser, 2019, mit Ludger Hovestadt und Sebastian Michale), Sheaves, When Things are Whatever Can Be the Case (ambra, 2014), sowie mit Ludger Hovestadt, Diana Alvarez-Marin, Miro Roman und Sebastian Michael A Quantum City, Mastering the Generic (2015). Im Bereich der Kunst- und Designforschung hat sie das Buch Metaworx, Young Swiss Interactives gemacht und herausgegeben (Birkhäuser, 2003), und mit Martin Wiedmer den Band pre-specifics. some comparatistic investigations on research in art and design (jrp ringier, 2009). Sie ist Autorin zahlreicher Artikel zu Kunst und Design, Technik, Philosophie, und Architektur, und zusammen mit Iris van der Tuin und Felicity Colman ist sie Gast-Herausgeberin der Ausgabe Genealogies of New Materialism (Duke UP, 2017) bei Minnesota Review.

Vera Bühlmann, Digital Architectonics (in English). ..Vera Bühlmann is a writer and translator between various emerging “vernaculars” in contemporary thought, especially with respect to philosophy, mathematics and architecture. She is professor for architecture theory, and director of the Department for Architecture Theory and Philosophy of Technics ATTP at Vienna University of Technology. Since 2021 she acts as a member of the Hochschulrat at the Universität der Künste UdK Berlin, and also since 2021 ATTP is, together with the Center for Philosophical Technologies at Arizona State University and the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities, Skopje, a co-founding member of the School for Materialist Research (SMR), in further cooperation with the Critical Inquiry Lab at the Design Academy Eindhoven. SMR is an informal graduate and post-doc level program that offers seminars and workshops that address the materialisms running through contemporary science, philosophy, art, mathematics, design, architecture, and politics.

Previously she co-founded and directs with Ludger Hovestadt the laboratory for applied virtuality at the Architecture Department at ETH Zurich since 2010, and co-edits the applied virtuality book series (Birkhäuser, Basel/Vienna, since 2012). From 2012-2013 she was a guest researcher at the Future Cities Laboratory at NUS Singapore. After studying philosophy and English language and literature in Zurich, Switzerland, she obtained a PhD in media theory/philosophy from Basel University (2009).

She is the author of two monographs: Information and Mathematics in the Philosophy of Michel Serres (Bloomsbury Academic, 2020, in the Michel Serres and Material Futures Series edited by David Webb and Joanna Hodge), and Die Nachricht, ein Medium: Generische Medialität, Städtische Architektonik (Birkhäuser, 2014), and co-author with Ludger Hovestadt and Sebastian Michael of A Genius Planet (Birkhäuser 2017). She co-edited a special volume of Minnesota Review together with Iris van der Tuin and Felicity Colman on Genealogies of New Materialism (Duke UP, 2017), as well as the Metalithikum Books (all Birkhäuser, together with Ludger Hovestadt): Printed Physics, (2012), Domesticating Symbols (2014), Coding as Literacy (2015), Symbolizing Existence (2016).
